Our Story

A museum that demonstrates how the San Fernando Valley and its people fit into the world has been long overdue.

Valley_Image1Over 1,800,000 men, women and children live and work in Los Angeles’ vast San Fernando Valley. The 2010 census results may boost this figure to 2,000,000 or more. If the 300 square mile area that is the Valley were a single city, it would be the 5th largest in the nation. Statistics aside, what is most notable is this great region has, year by year, established itself as the creative capital of the United States, if not the world. Until now, there has been no one museum or institution to document, preserve and celebrate the full scope of the collective history, culture and arts of such an important place. Nor has there been an effort to record the influence the Valley has had, and continues to have, in the world at large.

Since its incorporation in California in 2005 as The Museum of the San Fernando Valley, The Museum community has pursued its goal to bring such an institution into being to serve the entire Valley. Like its enormously creative, industrious and resourceful population, The Museum is positioning itself to be at the vanguard of modern museum concepts.

While we are negotiating for a permanent home to house and display our collections, and create a headquarters for archiving the history and educating the world about the Valley, we are bringing the history and stories to you, in your communities. Virtual exhibits, mobile programs and tours are part of the permanent plan. Your Museum will always be a work in progress, even when the cornerstone is set. We will be on view in your libraries, touring your streets, seeking the art where it happens, preserving the precious and championing the history-making events of the day for generations yet to come.

We seek the support now, from all Valley residents, the business community, the public, private and non-profit sectors to meet our goals and objectives. Because…

“The San Fernando Valley Deserves a Great Museum of History and Culture.”
